Guiding Principles

The death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sent shock waves across the nation. I have been taken aback by the deep sense of loss and grief I personally felt since 9 September.

The Queen has always been a silent symbol of feminine strength, consistently in the backdrop of our lives. No matter the darkness of the surroundings or world affairs, she stood solid, committed and constant. There is much to admire about a woman, who until her dying day carried on performing her duty. A woman, who placed duty over all else. She led with wisdom and an undeniable sense of humour.

It was said the Queen’s unflinching guiding principle was her faith. That made me curious as to what my guiding principle was.According to the Longman Dictionary, a guiding principle is, “something that helps you decide what to do in a difficult situation.” I see it as the miner’s cap with lamp that lights the way.

Upon reflection, I can see my guiding principle has always been to do something that is meaningful for others and/or the world around me. This was a decision made preceding graduation from university, though quickly forgotten for the first 15 years of my career.

The loss of her Majesty had me question my own work ethic and sense of service to the world. An honest look at myself made clear that whilst I say my work ethic is good, it has slipped at times, obstructed by avoidance or procrastination. ‘Sabateurs’ stood in the way of something I wanted to achieve, and impact I wanted to have.

Over a year ago I was introduced to the concept of Positive Psychology, which sounded like a magic pill. Only, instead of swallowing a pill I was recommended a set of exercises. For 15 mins/day on the app and some interesting readings over 6 weeks, I was able to strengthen my capacity to respond to life’s challenges with a positive rather than a negative mindset, not allowing me to succumb to common sabateurs.
